Saville Hotel and Apartments - Urban Art Projects Suspended Foyer Feature

This signature $90 million 13-level apartment, hotel and fringe CBD development, was built by Lang O’Rourke for Stockland Development.

The 161 suite hotel shares residency with 88 luxury apartments and is the first Saville Hotel in Queensland. The development has won several design awards and is noted for its many innovative features.

One such feature is the entry sculpture comprised of Carl Stahl POSILOCK cables from Ronstan Architectural. With a sound artistic concept for an eye catching entry structure, Urban Art Projects approached Ronstan Architectural with concept sketches, seeking help to resolve the detailing for the main foyer feature.

A knowledge of tensile cables was essential. The concept involved floating coloured laminated glass panels in mid air in a random display of colour that would capture and reflect light to enhance the main public space of the hotel.

A system of the smallest possible diameter cables was required to facilitate the mid air suspension and Ronstan assisted with the design development introducing a selection of suitable connections from the Carl Stahl POSILOCK range. 1.5mm diameter cables and fittings were used and the whole system was comprised “off the shelf” products for a cost effective solution.

The end result employed simple and minimalist cable connections to hold the glass elements in the desired locations. As sunlight from the glazed façade passes through the panels, the coloured edges of the laminated glass glow, refracting light to all corners of the foyer.
