AIA CES Approved Course: Designing with Cables and Rods as Structural Elements

When used effectively, tension elements such as cables and rods allow designers to develop lightweight and elegant, yet stable structures. This course will introduce the basic principles and components needed to incorporate cables and rods into your next project. At the completion of this course, you will be able to identify when and how rods and cables can be used in structures, the factors to be considered in the design, and the process for developing and specifying a project containing tension elements. You will also understand the advantages of partnering with a specialty contractor to design and install a tensile structure.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will have an understanding of ‘what is a tension element’ and when it is possible to use tension elements, and the benefits using the examples provided.
  • Participants will have an understanding of the elements used in a tension cable and rod system and their functions.
  • Participants will understand why rods are used in some situations and cables are used in others.
  • Participants will have an understanding of the factors which influence the design of a system using tension elements and the steps involved in developing a project using Cable or rod, using example projects.
