Nestled within the dramatic limestone landscape of Punangairi (Dolomite Point), the new Punangairi Visitor Centre forms the architectural heart of the region’s wider redevelopment. Designed to open visitors to the cultural and ecological narratives of the place, the building’s refined timber structure is anchored by a discreet but critical Ronstan structural rod system supplied through one of our New Zealand partners Oborn’s Nautical.

The centre’s architectural language draws on the rhythms of the coastal forest and the deep cultural ties of Ngāti Waewae. Warm timber linings, sheltered verandas and a sculptural roof form respond to both the land and the region’s powerful weather patterns. These gestures demanded a structural solution capable of delivering strength, resilience, and long-term stability without compromising the design’s clarity.

To achieve this, the project team incorporated ARS4-GSM48 HD galvanised bracing bars and ARS6-GSM24 HD galvanised compression struts. The rod system provides essential lateral bracing and load resolution throughout the primary structure, ensuring the building performs under significant coastal wind forces and seismic events while maintaining its elegant, outward-facing form. The components also integrate cleanly with the timber detailing, enabling the architectural expression to remain the focus.

The visitor centre forms part of a broader redevelopment that enhances ecological management, improves visitor safety, and strengthens cultural interpretation across the site. Recognised with the 2025 John Scott Award for Public Architecture, the project demonstrates how thoughtful structural design can support a design rooted in place, community, and landscape stewardship.

Ronstan is proud to have contributed to this important cultural and environmental destination, supporting the project team with a robust, high-performance rod solution that will serve Punangairi for generations.
