The Stringybark Road Cycling and Pedestrian Bridge in Sippy Downs provides a new safe crossing of the Sunshine Motorway, connecting schools, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and local communities. Opened in 2025, the project eliminates a key missing link in the local cycleway and pedestrian network, encouraging active transport and improving road safety.
Safety and transparency were central to the design by Habitance architecture. To meet stringent standards for fall protection and to act as an anti-throw barrier, the bridge incorporates Carl Stahl X-TEND® stainless steel tensile mesh.
Ronstan Tensile Architecture was engaged from early design stages to help integrate a mesh system in compliance with AS5100 bridge codes and local requirements. The team designed, manufactured, and supplied prefabricated stainless steel frames with custom fixations, working closely with the contractor to ensure accurate installation and smooth delivery.
The result is a bridge where protective measures are built in without compromising the architectural intent. The black X-TEND® mesh recedes into the background, maintaining transparency and views while providing robust, long-term safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists below.
