The Westhaven Boardwalk connects Westhaven to the new Wynyard Quarter residential, retail and recreation precinct, and is part of a $14 million project to provide a shared promenade for walkers and cyclists through Westhaven Marina along the Auckland Harbour waterfront.
In keeping with the aesthetic of the harbour’s yachts and the marine heritage of the area, boardwalk architects LandLAB specified a stainless steel cable balustrade with timber handrail and corner posts for fall protection on both the seaward and landward sides of the wide timber boardwalk.
The use of tensioned stainless steel cable for balustrade is still fairly uncommon in Auckland, however the track record of similar projects that Ronstan has designed and supplied world-wide is good cause to be confident that the solution will be both fit-for-purpose and look amazing.
Ronstan supplied Marine Grade stainless steel cable, cable end-terminations and tensioners for the project. The benefits of the marine-grade stainless steel wire rope include its ability to withstand the corrosive marine environment, and provide an extremely weight-efficient and strong solution without appearing bulky. This allows the maximum enjoyment of an unrestricted view.
The Ronstan Threaded Terminals with Nyloc nuts and Threaded Terminal Adjusters ensure the cables will remain properly tensioned for years to come. These products also represent a sound technical solution for projects like this one where the cable runs vary from longer uninterrupted sections to short sections at right-angles where the boardwalk alignment shifts.
Structural Rigging Systems undertook the first part of the balustrade installation for Downer Group, with the balance completed by Downer themselves. The consistency of the products, and the highly accurate specification in terms of supply based on the detailed design brief assisted with a smooth transition between installation teams – a situation that could otherwise have been fraught with difficulty and delays.
The Westhaven Boardwalk forms stage one of a multi-stage development of boardwalks within the Westhaven Marina complex, bringing new life to an area on the edge of Auckland Harbour that was previously dedicated to heavy industry.
Since opening in January 2015, the boardwalk has become popular with local families and those berthing at the marina facilities for its spectacular views, Maori cultural elements and as a convenient and safe way to access Wynyard Quarter.
The boardwalks also form part of an overall Auckland Transport masterplan for a 21 km cycleway stretching from the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the west to Saint Heliers in the east.
